Samsung Electronics Strategic transformation: Partnering with TSMC to break into the NVIDIA ecosystem

Samsung Electronics recently decided to temporarily slow down its wafer foundry business and devote more resources to the research and development of artificial intelligence memory in response to growing customer demand. According to South Korean media reports, Samsung may form a partnership with TSMC in order to enter the Nvidia ecosystem, which is a key turning point for Samsung at present.

In its latest earnings report, Samsung acknowledged the poor yield performance of its DRAM chips and expressed its intention to jointly develop high frequency width memory chips (HBM) with other foundries. Vice President Kim Jae-joon noted that the ability to customize HBM chips is critical to meeting customer needs, and Samsung will be flexible in choosing production partners.

Although Samsung had promised to provide a one-stop shop in the field of AI chips, its strategy had to adjust to win Nvidia's order. Analysts generally believe that a potential tie-up with TSMC would mark a major concession to Samsung's technology and market position.

At present, Nvidia's market share is as high as 80%, and it maintains close cooperation with SK Hynix. In contrast, Samsung, while supplying HBM3E chips to multiple customers, has not yet been endorsed by Nvidia. In order to catch up with the market, Samsung must make greater efforts to improve chip technology and production.
