TSMC Chairman and CEO Wei Che-jia recently said that the demand for artificial intelligence (AI) is real and the company is expected to achieve continuous and healthy growth in the next five years. He revealed that customers have asked more about the 2nm process than the 3nm process, showing that the 2nm process is more popular in the market. In the third quarter of 2024, shipments of 3nm, 5nm and 7nm processes accounted for 20%, 32% and 17% of TSMC's total revenue, respectively, with the 3nm process being the main growth driver.
At present, the shipment momentum of 3nm process is strong, the proportion has climbed significantly, and is expected to continue to rise next year, and will remain the main driver of TSMC's revenue through 2026. TSMC believes that the 2nm process can not only replicate the success of 3nm, but even have the potential to surpass it. Market research institutions predict that tech giants such as Apple, Nvidia and AMD will be TSMC's first 2nm customers. In recent months, TSMC has accelerated the construction of the 2nm production line and expanded capacity planning.
TSMC also stressed the importance of integrating AI chips using 3DIC technology, with plans to offer related designs in 2027, including logic chips manufactured by the A16 process and 12 HBM4 chips. The company believes that the A16 process is very attractive for AI server applications and is actively preparing the relevant capacity to meet customer demand.
